19th Century charcoal drawing of prominent Black American woman in Victorian
dress. Drawn on a lead (or possibly zinc) sheet molded to the subject's features,
creating the portrait's three-dimensional look. Looks so real that we first thought
it might be a photograph, but it is not.
Image is 13” wide x 19” high. Framed in a exceptional nice period
late 19th-early 20th Century oval frame and domed glass, it measures 16" wide
x 22 1/2" high.
The domed glass on the frame made it almost impossible to avoid reflected light
and images in photographing this portrait. Trust us on this one; it is a great
image. Period portraits of African American women are hard to find; and the medium
used for this one is very unusual.
