1912 Martha Vineyard Calendar with six two-month sheets 7 ½” x 10 ½” held together with a piece of yarn; each sheet features a different local Vineyard photograph: Three feature children performing important events in the history of Martha’s Vineyard for the Vineyard Pageant of 1911. One features photo of the Old Cedars at West Chop: and one a photo of South Beach. November and December features two photos of resident hunters, one titled "A Morning's Hunting at Great Pond"; the other "Bringing Home the Game".
We were told by Vineyard residents that the precise origins of this calendar are unknown. They believe the Pageant was an annual event when residents dressed in period costumes and acted out important events in Vineyard history, such as its discovery. Postcards and calendars with pictures of the Pageant were then sold as souvenirs to early tourists visiting the island. The MV Historical Society has one calendar; another was recently sold by a Vineyard antique shop. These are the only others we are aware of.
How many more can there be? In any event, these are great images of the Vineyard that used to be.
