Full-bodied copper alloy whale (36” snout to tail; 18” tail to belly) on a 56” steel post, with cast iron N /S / E / W directional sign (23” diameter), and capped with two (2) copper balls (4 ½” and 2 ½” respectively). This whale is in great structural condition, with no holes or breaks in the soldering. Patch of light red rust evident on right side (facing) of whale head appears to be the scar from an old lightening strike.

This one is clearly not a reproduction. The green patina on the whale is the real deal, as is the accompanying surface rust on the iron and steel accessories. However, putting a definite age on it is tricky. It may be as early as the late 19th century or as recent as the mid 20th century. Either way, older full-bodied whale weather vanes are harder to find that running horses; and this one is gorgeous.
