This circular drying rack (made of pine, ash and maple with a natural finish) measures 43 ¾” in diameter. The spokes are tapered and the central shaft has been shaved. It is designed to hang from the ceiling, and would be stunning suspended in a great room or country dining area.

Very strong provenance. This piece is pictured in Mary Earle Gould’s book of Early American Wooden Ware (page 222). It is also pictured and described in an article in the October 1997 issue of Country Living magazine featuring the owner’s Akron, OH home and Americana collection. This article describes this piece as an "apple dryer” with “ingenious design” that “calls for it to swivel gently as heat rises from the fireplace”.

Purchased at private auction of all Shaker items held at the Shaker Village Museum in Hancock, MA in 2002, this was the first time this apple dryer had come up for sale since purchased by the Ohio collector 27 years before (1975) from Celeste Koster (east coast Shaker dealer). Comes with a note signed by a member of the collector’s family verifying the collector’s acquisition history.
