Inlaid wood veneer bureau boxes, commonly known as a "Poland Spring" boxes, were one of the “fancy goods” made for sale to the “world” by Sabbathday Lake, Maine community Shakers in the late 19th century. These boxes were intended be used for jewelry, sewing items, etc.
The inside of this box is in exceptional condition. The original decorative patterned blue paper lining, mirror inside the lid, and tray insert are all intact. The tray includes a pincushion and lids for two compartments covered with red patterned fabric that also appears original.
The outside is also in good shape. Only the key and one small piece of inlay on the left front corner of the lid are missing (see photo).
