SOLD - SOLD - SOLD "She Was Born in Old Kentucky” Green River Whiskey 24” Charger
Not a reproduction! This beautiful advertising piece for the “The Whiskey Without a Headache” is a late 19th-early 20th Century lithograph by Chas. W. Shonk Company (printed along the lower rim, but not visible in the pictures above). “Copyright owned by J. W. McCullock” (presumably either the artist or someone connected with Green River Whiskey) is visible along the lower edge.
Shonk, located 218-222 West Van Buren Street, Chicago, Illinois was established in 1877 and became one the premier advertising lithographers of the day, producing many advertising items such as mirrors, trays, and metal signs using the " stone lithography method " of printing for such well-know companies of the day as Coca Cola.
The coloration of these lithographs was accomplished by using multiple stones of virtually the same picture, with nine different colors on each stone. The complete number of stones used could easily be twelve or more. Once the production run had been completed, the stones were re-used. The images were ground off and a new image created on the soft limestone.
This metal item is in very nice condition with no rust. There are only a few small scratches on the front that do not detract from the effect. The color is still surprisingly bright. The back has a nice patina and a fastener band for hanging on the wall. The depth is 2" at the outer edge.
