“Farmers Friend” wooden egg carrier with original heavy gauge wire handle and black wooden grip (circa 1900). Used by local Schoharie County, NY farmers to bring eggs to market at H. A. Kilt’s “Handy Grocery” in Cobleskill, NY (45 miles west of Albany).
Slightly irregular shaped box (10.Ľ” high; 12 1/4 " sides; 11 5/8” back & 12 ˝” front) in sturdy condition, with mustard colored original paint. Black stenciling on one side announces that the “Farmers Friend” was patented August 30, 1898, and manufactured by the Quincy Egg Carrier Company of Quincy, IL. Black stenciling on two other sides advertising “H. A. Kilt’s Handy Grocery” appears identical, suggests the box came from the manufacturer that way. .
2” side boards provides additional support for wire handles. Shows normal wear and tear from intended use. All four inside walls scored, presumably from removable metal racks used to stack multiple layers of eggs (not included).
